Erbi Breez Microbioreactor vs. Stirred-Tank Bioreactors

Conventional stirred tank bioreactors are, well, conventional. Erbi Biosystems took each function and found improved ways to perform it, but in a smaller, more efficient package.

Filtration Collection

Cell retention for perfusion is accomplished with an add-on filter system.

The Erbi Breez handles this function with an embedded PES filter and integrated pump that pulls filtrate through and retains the cells in the bioreactor. The filtrate is collected in a bottle that is part of the consumable, which also includes a 1.5 mL sample tube of expended media.

Automatic Cell Bleed Control

Cell bleeds are usually conducted manually after calculating the required dilution or setting a constant bleed rate.

The Erbi Breez performs cell bleeds automatically in response to measured optical density in order to hold a constant cell density.

Volume Control

The working volume is maintained by balancing the inflow and outflow pumps and weighing the fluid sources, outputs, and reactor tank. This is a lot to set up, manage and maintain.

The Erbi Breez does much of this work for you automatically. It can maintain a constant working volume using its reconfigurable mixing membranes and fixed-chamber volumes. Its pumps are factory calibrated, so flow rates are reproducible across different devices. By configuring the mixing membranes so that two chambers are completely full and one chamber is completely empty, opening an output valve releases any excess liquid which restores the 2 mL working volume.
